Terraria is a two-dimensional action-adventure side-scrolling sandbox game with a focus on crafting and exploring worlds that are made up randomly.
This is a side-scrolling adventure game where players explore different landscapes, make things, and fight enemies. As players look for materials and mine for them, they meet "cartoon" animals and other creatures (e.g., penguins, bats, slimes, herplings). Players kill enemies with swords, axes, and bows. Sometimes the enemies break up into small pieces. "I want what Allison is selling." "What do you mean, she doesn't sell anything?" "I don't give happy endings." "That's not the biggest I've ever seen." I've definitely seen bigger wounds." Kegs and ale can be used to make power-up and enhancement items. When players drink ale, their status sometimes says "tipsy."
The game plays like an old-school Metroidvania coupled with "Minecraft's" sandbox concept and endless construction options. The environment is full of distinct biomes, diverse foes and friendly NPCs, and a remarkable range of weaponry, armors, construction blocks, and everything in between, including systems for fishing, golfing, and home décor. One could play "Terraria" for 100 hours and not see everything. However, the main gameplay loop of equipping your character, slaying enemies, and looting their corpses for increasingly stronger stuff is more than enough for action fans.
